I’m recently new to substack, all thanks to my husband joining. He served over 21 years in the Marine Corps, retired, and found that writing is his passion. He’s amazing at it, and I’m not just saying that out of biased-ness. I’d like to nominate him to be featured, as i think there are so many more out there that would like to follow his reads. The Sword and Pen, by Aaron Courts. Give it a look!

Isn’t Substack Reads supposed to give us someone’s work to hopefully garner subscribers (and broaden our horizons)? Why would you include articles that require a subscription to read in its entirety?? This seems counterproductive to me. I was interested in the Calvafy poem and the authors take. I didn’t get to read enough to even make an opinion on whether I’d subscribe to this author. Do these writers know they are being featured? So they could drop the paywall for one article. Disappointing.

Highly recommend a fellow writer who has launched her Substack: Deep Kimchi. A half-Korean, half-American writer and best-selling author shares her story of how she came to give no f's in middle age and become her best self in body and mind. Important information shared with humor and wit.

We’re excited to be bringing our popular newsletter, Cook the Vineyard, over to Substack! We’re all set up for subscriptions and the first newsletter from

Substack (actually volume no. 232 for us!) goes out this coming Wednesday. We’re all about cooking and eating deliciously in season, and we’re produced here on Martha’s Vineyard by the Vineyard Gazette Media Group (publishers of the 177-year old Vineyard Gazette) and edited and written by four -time cookbook author Susie Middleton (who is also the author of Substack Sixburnersue). Coming in this week’s edition: winter farmstand finds, make-ahead chocolate soufflés, Double-Lemon Brussels Sprouts with Parmigiano Pebbles.

This is a very tough prompt. Some of my 2023 favorites include:

- this essay from This Is Why! on the joys (yes, joys) of rewearing clothes: https://andthisiswhy.substack.com/p/lizzie-mcguire-outfit-repeater-fast-fashion

- Sarah Grand's beautiful and bittersweet two-week romance with a "man called M": https://thegrandweekly.substack.com/p/i-barely-knew-you

- a *scorching* repudiation of "influencers can't have opinions," from one of the best writers on Substack, IMO, Clara: https://colormeloverly.substack.com/p/were-getting-influencers-all-wrong

- Austin Tedesco's fascinating look into the kitchen of a hot restaurant from an outsider; a good chaser for The Bear for obvious reasons: https://bangersandjams.substack.com/p/how-to-get-your-ass-kicked
