I always enjoy these!!! If I could make a recommendation, please give this a read, it was my favorite essay I’ve read in the last year and I haven’t seen it mentioned. It’s about a local bookstore owner going to a book fair, the author is his son, and there are all these hints at side stories I haven’t stopped thinking about since I read it. https://open.substack.com/pub/charliebecker/p/a-pilgrimage-for-book-people
Hi all, shameless plug here.. this is my latest about the misguided trend to flatten subcultures into becoming "normal", all the while misunderstanding why they exist in the first place. Enjoi!
Another great selection. I'm a Brit, and I was in the USA when news broke that the Yorkshire Ripper had been caught. It made the front pages. We all breathed a massive sigh of relief. Women in the North of England had been scared to go out, especially alone. And how many women were attacked because of police incompetence and that hoaxer?
Thanks for sharing and categorizing. I like that you are including memoir and poetry and nature, so many options really and also highlighting the new launches. I have only been publishing since February, and it is a lot of fun. It is bringing a little extra joy to my life.
Hello all, I wanted to highly recommend Arnie Sabatelli’s Substack, JourneyCasts, link above. These pieces are a lovely, peaceful read in a chaotic world. I’ve enjoyed every one. Check it out.
I too traveled along the Mosul River / but then I conjure Reminisced Smetna - Ma Vlast - the song about the River- and then I think about Old Man River...
Your 1939 Fair essay grabbed me from it’s opening, and I am recommending it to friends and family who will remember my Mother’s stories of going there as a child of 13 from her home in rural Maryland. I am sure it contributed to her she up going to Barnard for college instead of locally, as her much older siblings.
Thanks Substack for all you do and for the mention of my Notes and follow ups.
The blossom has been spectacular this week! ✨ 🌸

Thanks for featuring a poet! Great to see that talent highlighted. Also excited to read about the World’s Fair. So many great inventions came out it.

Might be worth unlocking the comments on that one since it’s been featured!
Would love to know how to get featured!

I just wanted everyone on substack to know that my sister, Barbara R DiCianni passed away on March 25, 2023.
She loved writing on substack and was an enormous fan of Patti Smith from the first time we saw her in 1979 at Penn’s Landing in Philadelphia.
We continued going to Patti’s concerts and to her appearances at The Philadelphia Library until November of 2022.
Listening to Patti was an absolute pleasure for all of us in the DiCianni family.
Thank you all for your kind comments on Barb’s posts.
Sincerely,
Arlene DiCianni Zibelman
I’m sorry for your loss.
Thank you for adding a section on food and drinks to this round up, it’s been awesome discovering other food writers.
If i may shamelessly plug away My own publication I’d love for you to read my latest essay on why Who writes the recipe matters : https://perzen.substack.com/p/who-writes-the-recipe-matters
I’d love to hear different perspectives on this topic and feel it’s an important discussion to have.
Great roundup as always. Keep em' coming.
