This week we have something of a “creative” special for you, kicking off with Fight Club author Chuck Palahniuk, who explains his unorthodox approach to bringing compelling characters to the page. Brandon Taylor dissects why the latest Jane Austen adaptation has it all wrong, and Damon Krukowski celebrates the last of the great nature soundscapes.
Brandon Taylor’s piece had me in STITCHES. 🤣🤣🤣 It really got me because I just published a piece an hour before seeing this about crappy regency adaptations and how I can’t bring myself to watch this new version of Persuasion. https://thecharrette.substack.com/p/bonnets-bridgerton-and-why-we-get
Very excited to read "The Last Field Recordists" from Dada Drummer Almanach — a great publication in general, but I also find this topic in particular very fascinating.
So many great writers, I really enjoy reading what my peers have to say, so any people writing with passion about the things they are passionate about, on this wonderful platform. I wish I had discovered it, and them, years ago. But it is never too late for a good thing.
Reading 'Keeping An Eye Open, Essays on Art' by Julian Barnes. I continue to be amazed by the breadth and depth of subjects Barnes writes about. As always, such exquisite language too.
thank you! I am flattered to be in such good company! and thank you We Will Tell Her For You for recommending my newsletter in the first place :) Please allow me to do the same. Check out We Will Tell Her For You here. https://wewilltellherforyou.substack.com/ The writing is like cinéma vérité for the page, thoughtful and frank, sometimes pensive, often humorous, stories and observations.
I’d love to see David French featured. Whether one agrees with his politics or not, I always find his words earnest, thoughtful, and thought provoking.
thanks for the shoutout! so many other great reads in here too :)
Really enjoyed Heat Index, beautifully captured!
Thank you!

Further proof, if proof were needed, that all of the interesting stuff is being written here.

What happened to Glenn greenwald? I subscribed for his writing or bari Weiss. The rest is pretty or superfluous.
