Thank you so much Nick and Team Substack for including my book deal announcement! I’m a Chicago native and a big High Fidelity fan so it was surreal to get notified in the app this morning that Nick Hornby had mentioned me (??!)
Congratulations, Ann! Well-deserved and long overdue. Your Plath articles are the first of yours that I read, and I became an immediate fan of your superbly written and erudite work. Every single post is a gem. As are you.
You mean for Inner life, right? I wish for my own site (wishes and hopes. My feeling about your site is that I can't help but read it: you are a marvel, Mary.
In case you have any doubt that others are reading and appreciating your curated lists, I wanted to chime in and tell you I am here. I read your list and always find new stacks to read. Bravo.
Amazing list! Was already aware of Cambridge Ladies Dining Socity and Brandon Taylor's sweater weather, and am fascinated by the others. Looking forward to diving in, with coffee 😊
Monkeypox is a viral illness that presents with a range of symptoms. Here's what to look out for:
1. **Initial Symptoms** (within 1-3 days after infection):
- Fever
- Headache
- Muscle aches
- Back pain
- Swollen lymph nodes (a key distinguishing feature from smallpox)
- Chills
- Exhaustion
2. **Rash** (appears 1-3 days after the fever):
- The rash usually starts on the face and then spreads to other parts of the body, including the hands, feet, and mucous membranes (mouth, genitalia).
- The rash progresses through different stages: macules (flat discolored areas), papules (raised bumps), vesicles (small fluid-filled blisters), pustules (filled with pus), and finally scabs that fall off.
3. **Additional Symptoms**:
- Sore throat
- Cough
- Difficulty breathing (if the respiratory system is involved)
- Eye redness or conjunctivitis (in some cases)
Monkeypox symptoms typically last for 2-4 weeks. The severity can vary, with some cases being mild and others more severe, especially in people with weakened immune systems.
Excuse me, but the Biden presidency was not a "good outcome." At least half the country thinks he was the worst president in American history. If a foreign power had set out four years ago to undermine America from within, it could not have done more damage to the country than Biden has done in that time.
Thanks for sharing Brandon Taylor's essay. It was incredibly thought-provoking, and it left me wondering...
What about when the creation of the art is intertwined with the abuse? Specifically, the artist abusing those he was making the art with. That's why I'm still trying to reconcile with, as I've shared in the below pieces. The second one reflects on Claire Dederer's book.

I so agree with the marvelous Mary Robyn--and am so glad to have found you, Ann.
And Mary, you’re one of the stars in my firmament. Your Featured badge is long overdue.
BTW, Mary, I want to schedule you and Ann for the new year for Inner Life! I know that's way out, but I hope you both will agree.
Mary, I’m honored and I’m in. You are one of my heroes, both for your writing and for the marvelous person you are. I can’t thank you enough.
I'll be in touch via email in the future: you have been on my list for a long time. You and Ann! So glad you're in!

Oh, Mary! You are so kind to me. I want more than anything to see you extend that kindness to yourself. You are a gift
I treasure your work and I treasure you.
Oh gosh, Nick, thank you so much, again. Let’s make it at least a 20 year run before we team up, shall we? ❤️
Yaaaay Chloe!!! 🤗

Well, this is a pleasant surprise. 🤗 Thanks a million, @Nick!
I think Death and Birds is quite possibly my favourite of all Substacks. I'm so pleased to see Chloe's writing featured here.
Emily, you are so good to me 💛
Some good choices. I love Ann Kennedy Smith especially.
Thank you so much, NH. 🤍
