I have no idea how this is gonna play out long term but I’m here for it! The combo of Substack paywall + threads = Twitter that I’d actually like to use
Wow, Substack is killing it! Love this feature. I would much rather keep my audience on this platform than set up some other situation. Thinking I'll use it for my paid readers but we'll see. How are others feeling about this.
You can adjust your app notification settings by tapping the profile tab and the settings gear in the top right corner. You can also turn on or off notifications for a specific thread by long-pressing it. Chat notifications settings are independent of post notifications.
I’m trying to get ahead of the curve and be the first cynical contrarian hipster to post a complaint about this new feature but I can’t think of anything to moan about just yet. Oh well.
Worth a try!! Just hope it does not become fertile ground for Trolls to verbally filet people ala FB and Twitter... but that is free speech. One of Substacks positives, is that there is more substance and civility. Good luck!
I would love to do something like this on Substack. I can even imagine turning on payment on my Substack newsletter "moviewise: Life Lessons From Movies" to allow my subscribers to meet with me and other people who want to have a conversation about a movie in real time. That would be so much fun!
I absolutely LOVE substack and am so excited to be part of this community. However, I have to say as a new member, it's a little concerning to see you focused on rolling out new features (Eg chat and video) when there's a lot to be improved upon in existing features that could bring immediate value to members, such as but not limited to
1) importing selected posts from Medium (not everything as a Zip file(
2) embeddable code to put a pop-up on existing sites
3) making embeddable code more customizable on squarespace
4) the ability to delete posts....why isn't this a thing?
5) hiring more community managers. In the last community hours, not a single one of my questions was responded to...
I really look forward to trying chat once i'ts available in the Android app. It saddens me that you're ignoring so many of your readers and writers in this way.

So with an Android I am excluded from participation, sob.
We will have Android ready for you *very soon.* (If you know any Android engineers, we need more! https://substack.com/jobs)
But the app won’t work on my Mac laptop will it? Only my 📱?

Is there a way to turn off chat notifications (and leave the other substack notifications in place)?

Thanks!
Thanks for enabling chats. How does this different from commenting after a post?
Yes, I'm not seeing the difference either. I thought it was a voice chat like we can do on Discord:

Yes!

Writers have a few options to moderate their chat:
Turn off (lock) replies for a chat thread via the three dot menu
Delete any reader reply by long-pressing it
Ban any user from replies and comments by long-pressing their reply
Turn off reader image replies for their chat by long-pressing their chat row or going to your publication settings
Additionally, readers can flag and hide explicit images by long-pressing a reply.
Is there a voice option, or is this strictly text-based?
I use Discord to meet with people and do table reads for scripts we're working on, and it's a great way to get feedback, ideas, etc:

Hey Ho, let’s go!
Looking forward to using this when the android version becomes available!

More API in general....
Thanks for listening.
Nice!
Just testing this site, I have no idea how to use it yet

Substack is doing everything to build communities and to make sure that users stay on the platform!
It’s working!
In India users come up with Android phones only. It is better if your chat features are compatible with Android phones aswell.
Great idea 😊
